Toronto Rd 3: Federer def Llodra 7-6(2), 6-3, Berdych Rematch Next

Today against Llodra was a better performance from Federer as he shook off the rust after a long break from tournament play. It wasn’t a good start for Federer though as he got broken in his opening service game to trail 2-0. Not exactly a confident start, but at least he got the break back to trail 3-4. Both players kept holding serve and in the tie break Federer raced into a 6-1 lead. Llodra held serve once more after which Federer broke again to win the first set. In the second set Federer broke in the fourth game and the sixth game to take a 5-1 lead. There was some playing around between the players as it became obvious that Federer was going to win the match, and at one point Llodra served and underarm serve which caught Federer off guard and made him miss the return. At 5-1 Federer played a sloppy game and got broken, but had no problem in holding serve at 5-3.

I thought it was a more polished performance than the match against Chela, but that is to be expected after Roger’s break. I thought Roger’s returns was probably the key for him. He kept blocking the ball back to Llodra’s feet who is a serve-and-volleyer, which put him under constant pressure. He also looks like he is still trying to be more aggressive on the return which is good to see. Next up is the match that we have been expecting between Roger and Berdych. Roger lost his last two matches against Berdych including the one in Miami where he had match point. This is for me really where we will see if Roger is improving. He was expected to beat Chela and Llodra, so those matches didn’t tell us much. Berdych is the type of player that Roger has been having problems with. Berdych himself had a close three set win over Dolgopolov.

Against Berdych I’d like to see Roger at least try something different, whatever it may be. I’m sure him and Annacone will come up with some sort of game plan. I just hope that Roger will execute it under pressure and not just allow Berdych to dominate. Other good news is that Roger told reporters that winning 20 grand slams is a realistic goal for him. I don’t think he is bluffing because it’s not out of the question if he can turn things around with Annacone. But the important thing is that he is thinking big and even if he just adds two more slams that will be great. He also says that he knows his body better than ever, which is important as he ages. You can read more about it HERE.

  1. I think he will find the right tactics and win this match against Berdich.
Nice to be eaten as an icecream, don´t you like to be in pink too?

Well, it is extremely important who is going to eat and who is going to be eaten. At least from my point of view… I am old so I am a very old fashion type of person. :-)

  2. I was tricked by the “online” provider so I went to see the match after it was finished. Seeing the score I thought that it was the same pattern as in the first match but it seems that it wasn’t. Llodra is a pressure maker so if Roger managed to deal with him rather easy I am confident about the next match.
If Berdych is going to play very confident, because of the win on Wimbledon, I think it will be the worst way to approach this match. In this case it will be a very easy task for Roger.
It is good that the rematch is rather close in time because Roger has his chance to get back his confidence. I agree with Ru-an that confidence is the biggest issue now. Roger & Paul will definitely find a way to win. Just want to remember to Ru-an that he is the one that wanted Roger to win ugly :-) . In time I realized that “ugly” doesn’t necessarily mean to win in the “poor little” Rafa’s own style (perfect anti-tennis + dirty tricks – when you put your hand so often in your back eventually will get dirty) but not a brilliant game from Roger. Of course Roger’s not brilliant game is always better than that of the immense majority of the players in the tour but i am sure it will not happen like this…
In this case I agree with Steve that Roger is going to push up his level of the game to a new standard. The beauty will probably not be the same, meaning brilliant shots etc., but the game as a whole will look like a Sistine Chapel of tennis.

O MY GOD! What a terrific fight just won Roger against his demons……
O MY GOD! Thank you God!!!!!!!!
Nothing was ugly tonight!!!!! A fight of a man, defeated in a moment – again by his faults – but that had the chance to stand up till the very end. I hope that Roger understood what a immense gift from Gos was this win…

I have had enough excitement from this match, but he did it.
Who says Roger is not a fighter, who says he has lost motivation???
But please Roger don´t do this again.
    Talk about a heart attack!

  3. Amazing effort…he fought like a wounded lion to come through. He showed how much he still wants it, the pure white flame still burns within.

The new game plan may not be perfected yet, but he dug deep and found enough to come back from the brink of defeat.

    C’mon Roger!
