The notorious tennis writer, Simon Reed, has finally admitted his mistakes and apologized to Fedfanatics across the world that he was indeed wrong about the demise of Roger, and that Andy Murray is not quite ‘the true nr. 1’ yet. You may remember a piece I did last year, Simon Reed is a Clown, where Simon Read said that Murray was the favourite to win Wimbledon and that he was the true world number one. We all know what happened since then. Murray lost to Roddick in the semi’s and Roger went on to win the most grand slams in history by winning the title. He also went on to take back the nr. 1 spot, and has now won his 16th major at the Oz Open. You would have thought that Reed would have made this kind of apology earlier, like when Roger won Wimbledon, or when he took back the number one ranking, but it takes a lot more for Reed to apologize than that.
It didn’t matter either to Reed that Roger beat Murray twice in the mean time either, or that Murray did not end the year nr. 1, but nr. 4. Also it didn’t matter to Reed that Murray lost to Cilic in the fourth round of the US Open, after he predicted Murray would take the title. Reed also claimed that Roger was ‘handed’ the French Open and Wimbledon, and therefore Murray was the favourite to take the US Open. Maybe it wasn’t the nicest thing to call Reed a clown, but at the time I was kind of shocked what a tennis commentator and a person who writes for Eurosport would write. Now I just don’t care anymore. As for the apology, in the spirit of a true Fedfanatic I will accept the apology, but I can never take any of Simon Reeds writing seriously again. Not that I ever did.The guy is simply too biased and doesn’t show nearly enough respect for the best player in the world.
As someone who writes for such a widely read website as Eurosport, he doesn’t seem to care much at all about a realistic opinion either. If he had his own blog that was worshipping Murray it would be a different story, but for someone who writes for such a wide audience he is way too self involved. Therefore I can’t respect him as a writer. Some people are now saying that Reed jinxed Roger, because whenever he says something good about a player they go down. You could be excused for believing that Reed has now given Roger the ‘kiss of death’, but luckily I don’t believe in such nonsense. And besides, the GOAT is above such things.
Ps. My problem with this apology is that Reed wrote Roger off because he wanted Roger to be written off, not because he actually thought it was the case. He wants Murray to be the best so badly that he would say anything to make Roger look bad. Now that Roger has gone on to win yet another major, he has no choice but to apologize. That’s why it’s a bit hard to take anything he says seriously.
