Crunch time has arrived for Roger. He will probably only play around next week Wednesday but lets take a look at the draw then. First round he has a bye as a seed and the second round he could meet Karlovic. Lets assume Karlovic wins for now. Karlovic isn’t barely the threat on clay that he is on hard court and even though the clay courts in Rome is faster then Monte Carlo I expect Roger to win. Next he could meet Radek Stepanek who he lost to last year. That will be something Roger would like to rectify. Should he get past that hurdle he is likely to meet David Ferrer or Giles Simon, but I would give the edge to Ferrer who is in better form then Simon. Once again that would be a tough test. Should he make the semi-finals he is most likely to meet the Djoker.

As you know the Djoker made the final of Monte Carlo and gave Rafa a tough match. So should Roger meet him the Djoker would probably be the favorite. Roger would have a point to prove after losing it against the Djoker in Miami and should the rematch take place I have a feeling Roger will be very motivated to win. Personally I couldn’t stand another loss from Roger to the Djoker and I’m sure he feels the same. But I’m getting ahead of myself, for now Roger should take one match at a time to get his confidence back up. He is yet to give his clay court season momentum and every match he wins will help with that. Nothing should be taken for granted. A season or two ago Roger would have breezed through this draw but for now he is having some confidence problems.

Roger has been training hard the last week or so in Italy and at least he should be well adjusted to clay and the hard work he put in on court should give him some confidence already. But of course he still needs to play well when it matters and that is ultimately what will give him confidence. Roger should at least make the final here for his confidence but that won’t be easy. If he can just dig deep and grind out a couple of important wins it could do his confidence wonders. Rafa is already in the semi-finals of Barcelona this week and he must be getting tired as well. So maybe we will see him being upset at Rome like last year and then the title will be for the taking. Roger is in desperate need of a title isn’t he? One day at a time.

  1. Well, the draw could have been worse right? To be perfectly honest, I think this draw is perfect for Federer. Quality opponents to help lead up to biggest challenge of all, Nadal.

I don’t anticipate any problems with Karlovic; nor can I see him losing to Stepanek again. Then again, I don’t really have much to gauge where Federer’s game is at on clay. I hope that week of practice in Italy went well for him.

I think his first tough opponent will be Ferrer, who can be quite the formidable force on clay. Hopefully he can scrape by him, leaving Federer with the Djoker in the semis. My God, if there is one match he needs to win in this tournament it’s this one (if he can get that far). I hate it when Federer loses to Djokovic, and any tennis fan can see how much Feds hates it when he loses to him. I can almost (well, not really) handle Federer losing to Nadal; but losing to Djokovic just kills me. Djokovic is just so cocky and arrogant. This needs to be another shut out like in Monte Carlo in ’08; before the Djoker retired with a sore throat *snorts*, or like in the semis of the US Open 08.

Overall, the draw is fairly decent for Federer and really provides him with the perfect opportunity to gain some much needed ranking points (I will hate it if he loses his number two to Djokovic). Good luck in Rome Roger!

  2. Hi Jennifer. Yes his opponents could look like this: Karlovic, Stepanek, Ferrer, Djokovic, Nadal. Thats a nice progression. I really hope he goes a long way here, as in the final. Lets hope his preparation went really well and he is now in a better frame of mind then Monte Carlo. He wasnt ready for Monte Carlo so this should go a lot better.
