Roger Federer Interview from Stockholm

I enjoyed this interview with Roger. I don’t know if I’ve ever seen him this relaxed. He says it’s been a tough year but that it’s not finished, and he is determined to finish the year strongly. He also still has his eye on the number on ranking, but that it will require patience. They also ask him whether he thinks Nadal can win the calender slam next year, and he thinks that it’s possible. I think so too. If he wins Australia he will have a great chance to do the French Open/Wimbledon double, and then there will be only one slam between him and the calender slam, in which case he will be very hard to stop. But no doubt it will be hard, given that things can change quickly in tennis. Either way it’s nice to see Roger this relaxed. We fans tend to be very demanding, but he looks at peace with what he has achieved in the game.

He looks as if he is happy with his achievements whether Nadal chases them down or not. But it’s also great to see that he is till very motivated. As you heard, Roger will play on Thursday and it will be his 900th match.

Its difficult to get the forum going. I need people to be more active and it take time and effort for it to become active. Maybe you could help me. Did you join yet?

I just need someone who can help me post stuff in the forum and keep things active. It will take a long time before it becomes fully active probably though. I always get started and then after a while lose motivation for it cos people are just not active enough.

  3. Ru-an,
You are a true fan. You love/admire/respect the whole man, not only his wins. Not many are like you. I hope you will keep up this blog for a long time – even after Rog retires. I really appreciate you keeping us up-dated, entertained and happy with regular posts about our hero. You are very important to us, Rog fans! Don’t you forget that! I totally agree with steve that Rog is in unchartered waters now. His game, his successes and now having a family; there are no precedents. We, fans, therefore must get behind him, as you say, Ru-an no matter what happens. Yes, he will not win as much, yes he is not so dominant, yes, he is stubborn, yes, his brain freezes so often, etc etc. But as one of your readers say, he has given us more than enough and he doesn’t owe us anything. He could retire right now and nobody can accuse him of anything. But becaue he loves the sport so much, he is willing to let his “old” body go through more battering, willing to take the punishment of being thumped by players, willing to take all the ridicule and insults from media, etc. The fact that he is willing to go through all these rather than hang up his rackets when he is at the top speaks volumes about the character of this man. If I were him, I retire while I am at the top so I would always be remembered as invincible but not Roger. He is actually a very very courageous and unique man. And look at the video, so at peace with himself after a “thumping” from Andy! I take my hat off to him. The video is one of the most relaxed and at peace with himself I’d ever seen of Rog. If he is truly at peace with himself despite all the frustration and failures, then I am truly happy for him. We must give him space and time to breathe, to truly enjoy the twilight years of his tennis life without the pressure to always win. He already said he loves playing at centre court, playing in front of fans. We fans are the major reason he plays. As we get behind him enjoying his every match without always having to judge his every match, Rog would be able to play freer. And when he is free and is having fun, watch out! We fans shouldn’t put pressure on him. Let him work out what he has to do. We can still analyse his every loss or win but let’s do it with an objectivity that is uplifting and not down putting, always remembering he is in unchartered waters; giving him space, giving him allowance because of his unique circumstances. Given the same circumstances for another tennis player, I think they would have gone mad. Rog is doing extremely well balancing tennis, family and media. Artists can get moody and depressed and not very good in balancing things or being positive. Rog is an exception. He is truly an exceptionally happy, balanced and positive artist – one in a million. Also, Rog is a true/pure traditionalist in the way he believes, behaves, conduct himself in most areas of his life. It is NOT EASY for him to change. While we can get frust with this stubbornness in him, it is the traditionalist in him that contribute to his success : his faithfulness to his wife and family, his old-fashioned close relationship with his parents and people working close to him, not tempted to sensationalise/exploit his fame or his good looks, etc. Roger is a packaged deal. We can’t take the parts of him that we like and discard other parts that we don’t like. I say we love the man wholly. If he wins, we CELEBRATE like mad, if he loses, we analyse and judge him more kindly and we get behind him. Generally, I find that Rafa fans are much kinder to their hero than Roger’s fans are. Something that we can learn from Rafa fans. Maybe Rog has spoilt us too much. But it is time to change. We must not behave like spoilt brats forever. Daddy needs a break and needs to be spoilt back by us. Rog playing his 900th match in Stockholm! Way to go Rog! Look forward to your 1000th match! Read somewhere that a certain Caroline is compliling ALL of Rog’s 900 matches on DVD! Btw, LOVE that “naked” bodied Rog at the end. Ru-an, you aren’t getting into “porn” like Dootzies is, are you?! LOL! but seriously, I LOVE hot Rog. Don’t mind to get hotter! Any more such pics, Ru-an? Put it on!
