Best draw of the clay season so far for Roger considering Djokovic is not in his half. This will give him a good opportunity to at least make the final. There could be a rematch of the Madrid indoors Masters Series of last year should both Roger and Murray make the semi-finals, where Murray beat Roger. But first Murray has to get past Wawrinka or Del Potro and Roger would have to get past Davydenko. Roddick has one out of a hundred chance to make the quarter finals probably. He is that bad on clay. First up for Roger is either Soderling(head-to-head 8-0) or Andreev(head-to-head 2-0). Next he could face Blake who is currently in the semi-finals of the tournament Roger won last year, Estoril. I can’t see him losing before the quarter finals really.

Davydenko could prove to be a sterner test in the quarter finals though. But again you would expect him to beat the player he beat in last year’s Estoril final. In the semi-final he is likely to meet either Robredo, Murray, Wawrinka or Del Potro. And once again you wouldn’t expect him not to lose to any of these players. I really hope it’s Murray that goes through. I’d love to see Roger and Murray face off on clay and surely Roger would be the favorite to get one back over Murray after his two recent losses and a head-to-head record of 6-2. He’s desperately in need of a win over Murray and the clay would probably give him his best chance to do just that. I was hoping they can meet a few times during the clay and grass court seasons so Roger can get some wins, but it’s not guaranteed they will meet even once.

Another possible semi-final opponent for Roger is Wawrinka who he lost to in Monte Carlo. You would think this time he’d be ready for Wawrinka, in Monte Carlo he really wasn’t well prepared. Roger should go one round further this time and make the final, only his second of the year. The conditions should suit him nicely as well. Madrid is higher above sea level then the average ATP event and therefor the air will be thinner which will make the ball fly through the air a bit faster. This will suit Roger’s attacking game and give him an outside chance to win the tournament. That would be ideal preparation for him going into Roland Garros, but lets not get too excited. He has a long way to go.

In the mean time Roger was a surprise guest at a golf event held in Lucerne(Switzerland) by Emmi, a leading milk processor in Switzerland and one of Roger’s sponsors. They said he played some golf shots for the people who was thrilled by his skills and funny comments. Why doesn’t it surprise me that Roger has touch around the greens?! Nice to see him joking and relaxing away from the court. Hopefully it will put him in good stead to win his first title of the year. You can read more about it at Roger’s Official Website.
