Federer To Play Davis Cup

Hey folks. Just a quick post from me to update you on Roger’s injury and Davis Cup. The good news is that Roger will play the first singles against Monfils tomorrow after Stan opens against Tsonga. I say good news because it’s always nice when Roger plays, but I am also hoping he is not taking any risks that could cost him in the long term. Roger already made that mistake last year when he played with a bad back and it ended up costing him badly. I know it’s not an easy situation for him though. It’s the Davis Cup final and this may be his last chance to win a trophy he has never won. I have already made it clear what Davis Cup means to me but I realize for Roger it is a big deal and for me it is important in the sense that it could really inspire Roger for 2015 if the Swiss win the Davis Cup, especially with the eye on Australia early next year.

Three key figures for the Swiss

I was of the opinion that should there be any risk of making the injury worse then Roger should not play Davis Cup, but of course it is Roger’s career and hopefully he is making the right decision. The tie will open with the Stan vs Tsonga match which will obviously be huge. Whoever wins that match will probably be the favorite to win the tie. Stan has to really show what he is worth here. He doesn’t have any excuse after what happened in London. He played well there all week except for the match against Djokovic which it seems he tanked to save energy after losing the first set. And even though it seems that Mirka was the one at fault for what happened in London, Stan still needs to show his true worth here. It seems Mirka in her eagerness to support Roger actually worked against him in London. She really should have known better than to trash talk Stan as he was about to receive serve, especially since it was apparently not the first time it happened.

Of course this caused the altercation between Roger and Stan after the match which may even have caused Roger to miss the final. Who knows but it’s over now and it is just nice to see Fedrinka seems to have diffused the situation and that they are on friendly terms again. I think we all got a bit emotional about the situation including myself, and there is no need to assign blame. I’m sure Mirka also learned from the situation. I hope Stan can deal with the extra responsibility that is on him now with Roger having health problems. He will need to beat Tsonga as Gasquet and Benneteau will probably win the doubles against Chiudinelli and Lammer. This means the Swiss will likely need three singles points to win the tie. If Stan loses against Tsonga that will put a lot of pressure on Roger, which he doesn’t need with his injury. Ideally Stan wins both his singles and Roger only needs to win one.

One key relationship for the Swiss

Roger was hitting yesterday for 20 minutes I think and today he was hitting a bit longer. He said he would play singles without any hitting at all if he needed to which makes me kind of worried about his mindset. That sounds like Davis Cup is almost too important to him. I just hope he makes the right decisions and doesn’t jeopardize his health again. The rest of his career is more important than Davis Cup. Ideally the Swiss wants to win the tie in two days which would mean Roger doesn’t have to play a second singles, but that is very unlikely. Roger will probably have to play a second singles but at least he will get Saturday off to rest his back. I have said before that Davis Cup means nothing but that is not entirely true. Even though it means very little for the individual resume in my opinion it is still a very nice extra to have and will just make Roger’s resume a little more complete.

Not to mention what the Davis Cup title could do for Roger’s singles career moving forward, so Alllez Swiss!!

  1. I think if Roger wins the first set then he has a chance. If he loses it, then things can easily go downhill from there. Gotta be careful !!

  2. Well, here’s a couple of things that might work in Roger’s favor, in the spirit of positive thinking.

Indoor clay at least means that the temperature in the stadium can’t get too cold, which helps the back stay loose. On clay the serve is not as important, which would help Roger if his back forces him to serve at less than 100%. Federer does tend to play well indoors even if he prefers indoor hard over indoor clay. And I’m not sure I’d really consider Tsonga or any of the other French players true clay court specialists.

It is supposedly super cold inside the stadium !!

  3. It’s going to be an exciting final. If Stan wins against Tsonga (which he SHOULD do if he plays like he did against Roger in London – NO EXCUSES), then it is doable. Roger should be able to beat Monfils hopefully but it all depends on his back.

Finally, if Switzerland is leading 2:0 after tomorrow, then, my only problem is that Roger is still scheduled to play first against Tsonga on Sunday, which means that he’ll have to play.

If Stan was playing first again on Sunday and he won, possibly Roger could have just chilled. But by the looks of things, Roger will need to play two singles.

But in the end, it’s a BIG final.

A week ago I felt that London was bigger but in the grand scheme of things, Roger has won it 6 times. He has been in 9 finals. He is the greatest Indoors player of all time. If healthy, I am sure that he would have made an awesome match and possibly beat Djokovic.

But obviously, the Davis Cup is bigger for him. There is a lot of history there. So much history, that I read somewhere, that Roland Garros was specifically built to host Davis Cup matches in the past.

I suppose, there is a lot of tradition. The impact of a Davis Cup Win cannot be underestimated just like an Olympic Gold Medal in 2008 in Doubles let to Roger’s US Open Triumph.

So, all in all – if Roger and Switzerland manage to win it would be awesome.

In the resume, two check-boxes will be checked off – The Shanghai Masters 1000 win and the Davis Cup Win.

Cincinatti, Dubai, Basel and Halle just added to their totals.

The Wimbledon, London, IW, Monte-Carlo and Toronto just added to the lists of Finals.

Brisbane was Roger’s first participation in the tournament but I am confident that he’ll be able to add that trophy to the list of trophies in early 2015, if fully recovered and rested.

So all in all, Davis Cup is important – perhaps very important.

So, good luck to Roger and I hope that he’ll be healthy enough to compete. If he is, then the victory will come. Let’s hope for the best.

  4. Even a fit Roger needs to be on his game to play the likes of Tsonga/Monfils; what about an injured Roger?! No rocket science needed here. Only a miracle will suffice. Choose your miracles : The 2 French clowns choking it big time; Stan finally becomes The Man, Chiudinelli/Lammer playing the match of their lives. Zero expectations from me; just hoping for a miracle. If Stan wins the first tie, it might be the glimmer of a miracle about to happen. Otherwise, bye-bye DC! Oh, and also, Mirka, please stay at home..I beg you.. Lol!

Why should Mirka stay at home? I thought somebody needs to yell “CLOWNBABY”! :-) :-)

Hahaha! Very funny, Jiten! Btw, did you ever think Mirka had it in her?! To call Stan “Cry Baby” and at such inappropriate time and not the first time she’d heckled Stan?! If it’s true, not cool from her at all, especially as Stan is her countryman and Roger’s friend and a grand slam winner. Roger really respects and likes Stan; but does Mirka?! I think she is fiercely protective of Roger’s status in Switzerland and feels “threatened” by Stan. In fact before I knew about the fallout, I was a little surprised to see her more animated than usual and really involved with the match and I mentioned this to my cousin who was watching with me. And when the fallout happened, I was not too surprised as I sort of noticed something in her already. My heart goes out to Roger; not easy for him. And to Stan too. But what I don’t get is why Roger and Stan were so fiercely at it with each other; I’m sure they already prepared to save as much energy as possible for DC; so why? Couldn’t one of them have thought at some point when the battle got too fierce (and Roger already wearing a tape on his back) to back off a little?Maybe pride? Maybe overly professional? I would have thought Roger would back off (not Stan as he is too hot headed) as Roger is more experienced and level headed and already have stiff back. But no, they were both out for blood! Ha! Of course tennis is the winner. But at what price?! Thank god, they are reconciled now. Not in our wildest dreams did any of us think things would end up this way. If the Swiss wins DC, everything will be forgotten and everyone will be forgiven. If they lose, then it may go down as a Swiss tennis tragedy. I hope Stan proves Mirka wrong, becomes The Man and brings Switzerland to victory by winning both his ties!

Well folks we are all hoping that Roger will play well and not make his injury worse. However I think this week both Roger and Mirka are in a no win situation….if Roger wins, the tennis writers are sharpening their teeth as I write. About Mirka I will look forward to see her watching Roger play again, because if she decides to stay away from tennis it’s the one thing I think that would pull Roger away from tennis sooner than we would all like. We will see if Stan’s nerve will hold up against Tsonga and the French crowd who must looking forward to giving him a hard time! So C’mon Roger fingers crossed x

Hey Elizabeth, it looks more like it that Mirka did say it to Stan (although I am finding it hard to believe to be honest). She is not perfect, at all, if anything she is very protective of Roger. Which she NEEDS to be. But still, if she said that to Stan, then very bad and childish of her. Let both men just play Mirka and stay out of it. If you have to yell at someone… why not try Rafa or Andy or Novak?? :-) No, just kidding. :-) I do hope she is there today, even if it is just to show everyone that she made a mistake (one in 15 years or so) and that they are working it out. If she stays away, it will only fuel more gossip.

And lets be also very honest, I think we all OWE Mirka big and big time. If she would have said, look Roger, you did it all, now it is familytime, then he would have no choice than to listen :-) Right the here married guys?? :-)

    Hmmm…. Mirka-wanna-be… are you jealous of the real Mirka?? :-) :-) :-)

Don’t be… you are just great the way you are !!! Or… lets kidnap Mirka together and take her place :-) Roger won’t notice :-)

  5. Anyone already nervous?? I am. I took the half day off just to watch DC. So… come on Stan and come on Roger. But please Roger, take care of your back in that ice palace and…. go write history… your own well deserved history :-) Love you Goat der Goats :-)

Haha sis! I’m watching too, don’t know if I can last through got a busy day tomorrow. Yeah, let’s give the real Mirka a break. We take over for a while, heh heh heh! Yeah, Mirka is great for Roger and has been faithfully uncomplainingly lovingly supporting Roger thru the good times and the bad. No one can take her place. She made Roger. She can also break Roger. Such mighty power! But that crybaby remark is really low and uncalled for. C’mon Fedrinka!!

  6. The tie is in the balance. Roger sucked against Monfils and lost. He doesn’t look like himself but there is STILL hope.

I am not sure what is best though.

Stan is 2:2 all time against Monfils. Roger, if rested might be better prepared for Tsonga.

Or they could risk and go for the doubles tomorrow. If they lose that, then they’ll be spent.

    Will see.

    It can go either way.

  7. I think Roger and Stan SHOULD rest.

Roger will play MUCH better against Tsonga and with his back against the wall, he’ll beat Tsonga to even the scores at 2:2. France will take the lead tomorrow.

Then, it will come down to Stan and Monfils. They are tied 2:2 head to head so it will come down to that match. Hopefully, Stan will be ready.

Roger will probably lose to tsonga as well and have the worse end to the year he could have while making his back even worse than it was. he should not be playing. It’s clear now he came here and is still injured but he can’t not play because his country is in the final. He can’t let them down.

Alex, don’t despair! Roger will take care of Tsonga. Trust me!!! I have no doubt.

Roger was actually starting to play better as the match progressed. Monfils was just unstoppable today. Roger won’t allow to get behind the way he did today… It will go down to the wire.. :-) ))

I definitely think that Roger should pull out of IPTL and his exho against Stan though. Give it his all for DC, but win or lose, screw the exhibitions, he needs to get his health sorted. I think Roger needs to be more selfish :-)

I concur! I am optimistic about Sunday against Tsonga. Roger and Stan CAN do this!!!

“I’ll definitely make myself available if I feel that I can play proper tennis,” said Federer. “I started to feel better as the match went on. That’s very encouraging, I must say. I would think that I’m going to get better as the weekend goes on. I hope I’ll be fine tonight and tomorrow morning to give maximum possibilities for Severin and back up Stan and the rest of the team.”

We’ll see what happens!!! I am confident. Alex, don’t despair!!!
