Federer Takes Revenge Over Haas to Make Halle Final!

Howdy. By beating Haas 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 today Roger made his 8th final in Halle, and he has won 5 titles in Halle so far. Roger was in trouble early on though as he got broken in the 6th game. Roger saved 2 break points at 15-40, but Haas played a really good point to set up another break point and then took advantage. When Haas was serving for it at 5-3 and 15-40 Roger had 2 break back points but Haas played 2 good points and held serve to win the first set. How would Roger react? He reacted well because he got a break right away and took a 3-0 lead. Roger has a chance to break Haas again at 5-2 and 40-15 but Haas served his way out of trouble. Roger then held serve to love to square things up. At 1-1 in the 3rd set Haas disappointingly served 2 double faults in a row to drop serve. But we will take it any way we can get it.

From there on it was just a question of hanging on to serve, although easier said than done. I guess the 3rd set was a bit disappointing from Haas, but I like the way Roger came from a set down to win it. That reminds me of Roger 3.0. He wants it. The motivation is back. Again I couldn’t get the match stats on the ATP site but I am pretty happy with all facets of Roger’s game. He seemed to move well which is always key. Roger will face Youzhny in the final, who routined Gasquet 6-3, 6-2. Pretty surprising result that and Youzhny must be playing well. But either way I like Roger’s chances. The head-to-head with Youzhny is 14-0 and he has played him 4 times at Halle, dropping only one set. Halle has not necessarily historically been a good measuring stick for how Roger will fare at Wimbledon, but I’m not sure he has ever struggled this much at the start of a season either.

Lol

I just think he needs to win this title to have any shot at winning Wimby. I mean there are so many players who can be a danger to him these days that he needs to prepare well for Wimby. And by preparing well I mean playing enough matches and getting the winning feeling back. Since his break he hasn’t done much. He made the final of Rome where he suffered a confidence destroying loss to Nadal. That was as good as it got. The clay season was definitely not a confidence booster. It was just for Roger to get some matches after his break. I think Roger needs more than that if he is going to defend his title at Wimbledon. And making the final of Halle is a good start. Now he just has to win the title and he will go to Wimby as one of the favorites. If he loses to Younzhny it won’t help his confidence with Djokovic, Murray, Nadal, Berdych, and Tsonga all a threat to him at Wimby.

This is not all just about Wimby either. A 6th title at Halle will be an achievement in itself. The only places where Roger has won more than 5 titles has been at Wimby itself and the Masters Cup. Other than that he has 5 titles at the US Open, Basel, Cincy, Dubai, and Halle itself. But more importantly than that Roger has to win his first title of the year and put the first half of the year behind him. No doubt today was a step in the right direction for Roger and he must continue this run now. Who knows, he could even use this as a springboard to bag #18 at the All England Club!

  1. Oke Ru-an, now it is getting worrying.
Another article from you?? What the hell??
You post more articles than Roger is playing or winning matches and ……… I LIKE IT !!!
    Keep it up.

As for Roger, hope he forgets the H2H and realises that Youzhny had to beat three very dangerous players to get in the final.
So I hope Roger is not going to UNDERESTIMATE Youzhny. He beat him 14 times, maybe Youzhny had enough.
As long as Roger plays agressive and gives Youzhny the respect he deserves (for making a final) he will play good and win.
Roger already hit 14 aces, hope he has the energy left to hit a few more in the final

Go Roger Go. Keep it up. One more match to go.
Ru-an, you keep those articles coming….

  2. Hi Ru-an, someone on the ATP Tour site wrote a comment about how she hopes that the win over Haas would be the same for Roger as the difficult win over Davydenko at Rotterdam last year.
He was behind in the third set and at 4-4 he made it happen. After the Davydenko match he won so much last year. That is why that lady wrote that hopefully the Haas win will have the same effect on Roger and that he will win from now on a lot.

Would it not be funny, we are all worried that he has no title this year, and that he would win from now on so many titles that we will feel stupid doubting him??

I hope so Katyani but it will be difficult. I’m not worried about that anyway. I just want him to win his next match.

  3. Ru-an! it feels just like the good old days when every match is promptly followed by your post. I am so enjoying your blog and keeping in touch and just staying passionate about roger with the fed family here. Oh! I was so nervous, like it was a slam final. I hope dippy hadnt pulled some of her hair off after the first set!! I’m happy with his performance. Definitely moving better, service is good although fh going awry. Need to step it up more though against the top players but important is it is a step forward. He should win this one which will be just what he needs. Yes, katyani, how glorious it would be if its win win win from now on! But let’s not get ahead of ourselves. Common roger no. 6 Halle title!

We should arrange once to meet all in person and watch a US Open final together live behind the player’s box, of course one in which Federer wins!

  4. Fingers crossed for the final! He really needs this title.

Getting by Haas should have given him a better idea of where his game is so I hope he can deliver the goods for the last match.

It’s strange how in the last few years he has played opponents from his generation in the Halle final: Hewitt, Haas, and now Youzhny. Now hopefully Federer can show that he still has some more great tennis left in him. C’mon Roger!

  5. Anyone watching the match? I think Roger did underestimate Youzhny, who is in my opinion playing like the match of his life.
But this is good for Roger. Let this be a lesson for him, not to underestimate anyone, especially not someone who is tired of losing to him.
And this is also good for him, he has to work for his win, even if it is a 250 tour, even if it is grass.
But Roger will do it, he will win.

I’m watching too, Katyani. I don’t think he underestimated anyone, just Youzhny is playing extremely well and Federer was maybe a bit sluggish.

The first set started with Federer at 0-40 on Youzhny’s serve, but then he just made some silly errors to allow Youzhny to hold and that cost him the set. Second set was much more scrappy and more intense.

Now he’s leveled the match. Gooooo Roger!

The Russian is playing great! But Federer needs this kind of challenge, and I see his desire to win!

Hi Steve and Chris, maybe Roger did underestimate him a little bit in the first set. I think I could see it on his expression. But that is not wrong, he dealt with it and played better.
Youzhny is playing this year or mayby since RG very good. And he did deserve to be in the final. He did beat Nishikori, Kohlschreiber and Gasguet. They are not easy players to beat. I really thought Youzhny was playing extremely well. That is why I am happy that Roger won this way. If it was an easy win, he would not know more before going into Wimby.
BUT NOW…… he knows when he is playing not that good or when he is playing that good but the other is playing slightly better, than he knows he can beat him and that he is still hungry to win and that he is still fighting. He knows he has that fighting spirit and hunger for win in him.

I am so proud of him. All that talk about him not having the hunger anymore, not beeing ready to fight for it anymore, having won everything why bother, but THIS IS ROGER FEDERER. He will not play the way he was dominating several years ago. But he is adjusting and he is in a winning mood and he loves to fight, the challenge and above all the sport. He wanted this title so much.
And it is not like he lost the first set 6-2 or something or the tiebreak with 6-3 or 6-0, he lost by one point. And did you see the stats from the second and third set? He was not playing badly, Roger was actually very good.

As for his chances at Wimby:
He might not even get passed the QF at Wimby, but you can bet on it he will fight for it and he might even win Wimby.
No, I am not getting ahead of myself to be disappointed. I am celebrating his win today and then, I will look at it one match at the time and one set at the time.

  6. Roger is finally on the board. Congrats on the first title of the year. Finally! :-) ))

This should pump Roger up. I still think that Wimbledon is of huge importance to Roger because of the ranking. He wants to do well. I hope that this win today will relax him a bit and give him confidence for what’s to come.

    Allez Roger!

  7. Is he now on the same level as Mac Enroe or has he got one title more??? Hope the second one.

And lets not kid ourselves, it is not like the others have 5 to 6 titles each.
Novak has 3, Andy will have 3 too. Roger has 1, so have a lot others, Ferrer has 2.
It is only that Rafa has 7 (of which 6 on clay).
Like I said, with the exception of Rafa, it is not like the others already have 5 or 6.

  8. Oh by the way, Andy just lost the first set to Cilic with 7-5. Do you know Andy was initially up 4-1???
That did not even happen to Roger in the first set.
You know Andy will win, now, just like Roger, he has to go into an extra gear to do it.
