Federer refuses Prince of Asturias Award

While Roger isn’t in action today there is as always something to write about. Sportsya reports that Roger have refused the Prince of Asturias Award after having been nominated by Rafa and Spanish NBA basketball player Pau Gasol. He cited multiple reasons, saying that because of his busy schedule it’s difficult for him to travel to Spain and that he also had to think about his personal life. In a Swiss newspaper he also said that he has to look after his son in October. It seems to be a pretty prestigious award, with Michael Schumacher winning it in 2007 after both Roger and Rafa were nominated in the same year. In 2008 it was awarded to Rafa. Roger have of course won the Laureus Sportsman of the Year award a record four times.

The Laureus award is probably the most important award as far as I know so maybe Roger just feels he has other priorities now. Interestingly Rafa has been nominated for this year’s Laureus Sportsman of the Year award after a fantastic 2008 season. He won the French Open and Wimbledon, he took over the number one spot in the rankings from Roger and won the Olympic gold in singles, as well as many other tournaments. He is up against some stiff competition though in Michael Phelps and Usain Bolt among others. I think Michael Phelps will probably win it after winning the most amount of gold medals in an Olympic Games. But the way Rafa is going this year he might win the award next year.

  1. Why would he reject the award? Is it really because it would take time away from his family? How could it take that much time? Or is it because he didn’t feel he deserved it? Or because he felt like Nadal was giving him charity? Just sounds a bit strange to me.

Hi JDub, not really sure. It could be cos he felt Rafa was giving him charity. Im sure Rafa meant it well so that wouldnt be a reason to miss out on it. 2. During his match against Soderling there was a group shouting “vamos Rafa” and cheering when Roger did some UE’s. Probably this is the part of the reason doing that. And by the way Roger looks strange to me: refusing award, claiming a clay title, what’s next… I hope all this things are sings of rising confidence.
