Federer is BACK!!!

Wow, I don’t even know where to start. This is a massive win for Roger and I must say I’m overjoyed. Beating Rafa 6-4, 6-4 in his own back yard and on his favorite surface is a huge moral victory. Not even the crowd who was cheering for his mistakes and started acting like a crowd at a football match could stop him today. Surely now Roger has silenced the critics for a very long time to come. Not only is this huge for Roger’s future but also for tennis, as the Federer/Nadal rivalry is also now restored. I couldn’t be more pleased with the way Roger came out today, showing intent to play attacking tennis and serving exceptionally well when it mattered. He even served-and-volleyed on a few second serves! I just wanted to to express my joy with this quick post, feel free to join in! I will soon be back with a detailed analysis of the match, just need some time to savor this moment. Welcome back Roger!!!

  2. I just hear the news. Surprised that he won in Madrid in front of Rafa’s home country with 99.9% of the fans pulling for Rafa. Good luck in the rest of the year.

  3. Okay, I am eating my words here after I strongly stated yesterday that Federer really didn’t have a chance in hell of winning today.

    Well, I was proved wrong.

Obviously Nadal was not at his best; I don’t care what Nadal says afterwards, a four hour match like he had yesterday will affect him. The lactic acid build-up in his legs must have been significant as you could see that he wasn’t moving as well as he normally has been.

That being said, Federer still had to win the match; and contrary to what some people are saying, I do not think Nadal just handed him the match on a silver platter. Federer has, tactically speaking, played the best match, I think, against Nadal on clay today. I have never seen Federer pin Nadal to his backhand side so effectively on clay before. His forehand throughout the match was devastating (for once!) and he was serving so well. He got so many free points off his serve.

Obviously this is huge for Federer’s confidence going into Paris. It is so hard to say however if this can translate into a title at the French Open. The conditions are so different when you compare Madrid and Paris. Obviously just having this mental confidence for Federer will help significantly. If he can keep up this level of play, the French Open could become very interesting this year.

Here’s to hoping that Federer can get Murray in his half of the draw in Paris! Good luck to Federer in the French Open!

  5. Yes — Whenever we question Roger’s mental strength and his ability to overcome obstacles WE ARE ALWAYS WRONG!! He may dip at times etc etc because he is human, but to continue on in the face of the media bombardment and others almost making fun of him takes enormous mental strength. Bjorn Borg walked off the tennis courts forever when he couldn’t win the US Open against McEnroe. I read an article by Jim Courier that said 2008 was Roger’s best year because of the results he had with mononucleosis — he had an enlarged spleen through most of the year!
Roger’s older but he is strong and used a lot of new approaches today– It Was Great!
