Basel Final: Djokovic def Federer 6-4, 4-6, 6-2

What is there to say? After a long break and an easy draw into the Basel final Roger was expectedly rusty and very far from his best. I only got to see the last set an a half at work, and it was disappointing to see Roger play this way the first match I saw after his comeback to the tour. But what do people expect? After his long break after Wimbledon the same thing happened when he lost to Tsonga. That was an even worse loss though after he was up 5-1 in the final set. So not much to worry about. Just rust. Probably Roger will come back in Paris and win the tournament, although it must be said that it doesn’t seem to be his favorite tournament. The important thing from a fan perspective is that Roger is back on court, and that he will be getting better with every match he plays.

Against Djokovic he was hitting a lot of mishits off both sides. His timing was off and he looked low on confidence. But again I ascribe that to a lack of match practice. Even as talented as Roger is, he still needs to play matches to get back in the swing of things. In Basel Roger had a pretty easy draw as all the seeds in his half of the draw fell early. It doesn’t exactly do your confidence wonders when you march into the final after a long break without playig a top 20 player . I’m not trying to make excuses here. I really just think Roger was rusty and looked nowhere near his best. We all know what he did to Djokovic in Cincinnati and the US Open, so no need to think that he is all of a sudden having problems with Djokovic again. Just glad he is back!

  1. His FH was shanking a lot I didn’t expect him to win after coming back from 5 weeks break. Hope he will do well in Paris. By then he should have enough matches under his belt.

  2. I expected him to win. Djokovic was crap, Roger was way crapper. All good to call him rusty if Djok was on… but they were both terrible. It was bad tennis and I for one am concerned. He missed so many ops.

  3. Hopefully he does well in Paris. That is one of the 9 Masters he’s never won, I believe — the two others being Monte Carlo & Rome. Think of it as him chasing a “Masters Slam.” By the way, if one wins a “Masters Slam”, he will collect more points (9000pts) than winning a “Calendar Slam” (8000pts). Interesting, eh?

Well, for a while there I thought the blog was no more. Wondering what the cause was… perhaps the Serena bashing?? LOL :p

The points is the ATP Tour points you get each time you win a tournament. Each Masters Series win will give you 1000pts. There are 9 of them. You win all 9, you have a Masters Slam. Each GS win gives you 2000pts, there are 4 of them.

Nah i can bash Serena as much as i want without anyone being able to do a damn thing about it ;-) About the points, it was a pretty stupid question wanst it? I think it was after another long shift at work…

  4. Problems with Djokovic? Remember, it’s not long since he beat him in straight sets in Cincinatti, and then at the US open! This is just rust.

And remember, even when Roger loses these matches, it isn’t in straight sets. They’re always close. It’s when he starts losing in straight sets (a la Nadal against Del Potro, Cilic, and Davydenko recently) that we need to worry.

  6. It´s not a tragedy that he lost.It would have been nicer with a different outcome, but we fans can´t be so hard on Roger. He did get to the final after a long break.
Also putting the loss in perspective look at the year he´s had(record breaking slams record, marriage and twins baby girls).
Still as an addict fan I want him to do well in Paris and London.I´ll be supporting him.

  7. So, Ruan, how did you like Djokovic’s body language today? Very professional, wouldn’t you say?

On the other hand, your hero got himself into another argument with the ump.

  8. Has anyone noticed that the tournaments Roger has won this year are (some of) the ones he couldn’t win last year and he hasn’t been able to defend the ones he won last year! That means there is every likelihood that he would win in Paris and London.

  9. Look Ru-an what i´ve read fom Roger´s haters:”i like when Djoko dismantles R.F.”
“He´s becoming older and only a blind mind doesn´t see that he´s so more than 80% off the player he was””His haters won´t have to suffer much longer”.
This hurts how can they say this ? I´m so sad…
Hope he goes with his forehand to Paris …to shut this people´s mouth.

No worries Ines, the haters hate so much because they know their players can never come close to 15 GS titles.
