A Thank You Note

Wow, I don’t know what to say! You guys have blown me away with your responses to my last post. I really did not expect to get that kind of feedback from you! You can’t know what this means to me. You have given me the best birthday present I could ever hope to get. I am just amazed at the quantity and quality of responses I got. I know this blog is about Roger and not me, but I simply have to make another post to thank you guys. First let me thank Roger though, because without him this blog would not be possible and I wouldn’t have such awesome readers. I have been totally flattered and humbled by your comments. You guys have touched my heart almost to the point of tears on my special day. It is fantastic to know that I have been that much of a ‘link’ between Roger and his fans. It is truly humbling.

I started this blog only because I loved Roger and his tennis, and felt like I had something to give. But I never planned or expected that I would become a sort of link between Roger and his fans. So many of you have said that I have enhanced your Federer experience, and that being a Fedfan would not be the same without my blog. Once again I am humbled and it gives me great joy to know. You have really defined my role through your comments and support. So many people have commented to wish me a happy birthday and explain what this blog means to them. There were also a lot of people that commented who have not commented before. Some people commented that they have not missed a single post! I was just amazed that I have so many passionate and loyal followers.

I also know that you are honest and sincere people, and that each of your comments came from the heart. That is just the kind of people Fedfans and my blog readers are. Your comments is something that I treasure and will go back to read again and again. I had so much fun interacting with you guys and getting to know you some more. This is also one of the reasons I want to start some kind of community where we can interact even more. I love you guys. I want you to know that. This is really about Roger and his fans, while I am just another fan who likes to write about tennis. Yet you have managed to make me feel like and indispensable part of the whole process. That is a huge compliment to me and I want to thank you for that. I don’t even feel like I have done much to make this place what it is.

I have never tried to make this into a specific ‘type’ of blog. I was just trying to be objective and honest. But you my readers have turned it into a supportive and caring environment. I don’t even feel like I am a particularly supportive and caring person. I am just someone who says things as I see them, and as you know is the case with Roger, that can get you in trouble with people and get you criticized. You are really the ones that makes this blog into a nice environment. So I want to thank you for that because that draws more people here as well. I am also proud to announce that my blog is now on the first page of Google, as one of my readers filled me in. With all the stuff out there on the web about Roger, this is a huge achievement for me and you. This truly is now one of the most popular Federer websites out there.

Getting ahead of Wikipedia, RF.com, Roger’s Facebook profile, and Roger’s ATP profile will be hard, but I think we can go higher up still and make this an even more popular website. I do realize that the future of this blog is uncertain at this point, but I am currently negotiating with another big Fedfan who is good with building websites, as that has never been my forte. So I am hopeful that we can expand my blog and make it into something even better. Things are uncertain, and although uncertainty can be scary, its is a good thing because it brings forth new opportunities and growth, as a prolific commenter of this blog pointed out. The important thing is to remain optimistic, and no one sets a better example in that regard than the GOAT himself. So wherever you are and whatever is going on in your life, remember this lesson from the great Roger Federer!

Love you all and thanks again!

  1. You are the GOAT blogger, Ru-an! If this was a paysite, I would pay for it, as many others would! You have such incredible talent, technique and passion that your readers get addicted to your blog and can’t get the full enjoyment of the RF experience without reading your posts! Just imagine what that means! It’s ridiculous that you are not yet making a living out of this! No worries from my side for your future, which is full of great opportunities for such a rare master as you are. Maybe you have a mental issue of doubting too much of yourself, but hey, we all have from time to time, and when I say we all I mean even RF has! But not many people in this world have such a fan base like you have, for encouragement! And that’s what you can take from the latest post, tons of encouragement! You thought you had stopped being ‘a member of society’ during the past years, but in reality you have created a huge, very special community of which you are the leader! Be proud and self-confident for this achievement, And all my best wishes for your future! From a Swiss who is happy to tell anybody that RF is also a South African, because that’s where the GOAT blogger comes from ;-)

Wow, once again I’m blown away! There is just no end to you people’s generosity and ability to inspire me! Making a living out of this would be like a dream for me, because I love doing it and it doesn’t feel like work. You are right about me having a mental problem too. Because of the way my parents raised me I ended up having low self esteem and no belief in my own abilities. But the way you guys are responding helps with that because I feel like I have really achieved something here. You are amazing supporters not only to this blog but also to me personally. I am amazed that you would pay for access to this site. That really inspires me.

I would love to do this full time and make a living off it. I don’t have to make a huge amount from it either. As long as I could survive from it I would be happy. I wouldn’t want to charge people for access to my blog though. The joy I get out of writing and reading your comments is a huge reward already. Having said that, I should probably believe more in myself like you say and find a way to make this into something profitable. I may put a Paypal button up for people who feel like contributing, cos if people do contribute it could mean that I won’t miss any of Roger’s matches and do this full time, making it into something even bigger and better.

  3. Hi Ruan,
I don’t think I’ve ever commented on any of your posts, mostly because I don’t feel I know enough about tennis to offer a very educated opinion. I just always loved playing tennis and watching the slams that were shown in the U.S. for as long as I can remember. I didn’t follow the tour much until I found myself watching the U.S. Open one year and fell in love with Roger’s beautiful, elegant game and instantly became a Federer Fanatic. Unfortunately, it was a little late in his career and I missed some really big moments of his. So I went back and watched everything I could find of his earlier years and started searching blogs and websites as the Federer bug took hold of my being. I too visited the RF.com forums but found some of the members a bit unwelcoming to be honest. Anyway, I don’t remember how I came upon your blog but after I read a few posts, I added you to my feed so I wouldn’t miss any of them. What I appreciate most is your objectivity (even though it hurts to hear the truth sometimes) and yet your love of and respect for Roger always shines through. He truly is a remarkable man in so many ways, and you Ruan, have indeed been equally remarkable in being that link between Roger and his fans! Now when I watch Roger’s matches I find myself thinking, “what’s Ruan gonna say about this?” and being so eager to hear your commentary. I even find myself reading your posts to my mom who is also a Roger fan. So, having said all this, I guess I just wanted you to know here’s one more person you have educated, inspired and entertained with your blog. You definitely have a gift and have shared it with more people than you know! Thank you, Happy Birthday and may you have a Blessed Year!

You may have commented before because I didn’t have to approve your comment. Anyway there is no such things as an uneducated opinion here. Even if you just express your love and passion for Roger it is more than enough. It is about the community and sharing. Your comment means a lot. Believe me I don’t get tired of your comments. They just make me feel better and better! Hearing that you read my posts to your mom is so cool! I feel like you people have been so nice to me and that I almost don’t deserve readers like you. Just glad I have created this place for you and that it means something to you!

  5. Ruan, well done on an intelligent, informative and engaging blog. Roger Federer undoubtedly has his many fans but so it seems do you, for what you have provided others. I always look forward to reading your views of the game, and the debates you spark. These are not gifts to be commonly found anywhere, and especially in the world of the net. We are grateful.

  6. Ruan, your blog is definitely one I always look forward to reading, especially after Federer wins. I think your insight and humor add to the quality of the topic of discussion. You also seem to be fair to Roger’s opponents and are not blind to the quality and faults of their game. I also enjoy how critical you are of Federer and do not shy away from pointing out his weaknesses, strengths and that he is also a human being with some pretty crazy expectations and standards put on him. Keep up the great work and Happy belated birthday.
